Recipe: Hummus

Make your own hummus with just a few simple ingredients!

Many people purchase hummus at the store, but it is quite simple to make. Besides cooking the chickpeas, it’s also a pretty quick process.

To make hummus, you need just a handful of ingredients:

  • Chickpeas (garbanzo beans)
  • Olive oil
  • Tahini
  • Lemon juice
  • Garlic
  • Cumin
  • Salt

We recently started carrying lemons at Core Goods, and we can also place a special order for a bottle of lemon juice for you. We also have “Hummus Kit” gift baskets available, including all the ingredients.

Our chickpeas are dried, meaning they need cooked before using them.

How to Cook Chickpeas

It’s recommended to soak them, which drastically reduces the cooking time. To do this, just add enough water to cover the chickpeas and let them sit in the fridge overnight. Then, add them to a pot on the stove with fresh water, bring to a boil, and simmer until they are cooked through (about 1 to 2 hours).

You can also use an Instant Pot to cook the chickpeas. Just add them to the pot, cover with water, and cook on manual for 40 minutes. If you soaked them ahead of time, you only have to cook them for 25 minutes in the Instant Pot.

Or you could try the “quick soak” method when cooking chickpeas. Find more details here.

It’s okay if the chickpeas get a little over-cooked and mushy, because you will be mashing them together in the food processor for hummus anyways.

How to Make Hummus

To make hummus, you simply add the cooked chickpeas with the remaining ingredients into a food processor and mix until smooth. Find more details in the recipe card below:
