Item of the Week: Quinoa

We’re going to feature one of our bulk items each week, starting with white quinoa!

Did you know quinoa is technically a seed, not a grain? It is gluten-free and considered a “super food.”

Quinoa is pronounced “KEEN-wah” and, according to an article by Health Line, it is higher in nutrients than most grains. Quinoa contains protein, fiber, magnesium, iron, antioxidants, and more.

It is still considered a “whole grain food,” even though it is not a grain.

How to prepare quinoa:

The ratio for cooking quinoa is 1 cup quinoa to 2 cups liquid (water or broth).

First, rinse the quinoa through a mesh strainer with cold water to remove any dust.

Add quinoa and liquid to a pan and bring to a boil. Once boiling, reduce to a simmer, cover, and let cook for about 15 minutes or until all liquid is absorbed, stirring occasionally.

Once cooked, let sit with lid on for 5 minutes, then fluff with fork. Add herbs and spices, veggies, beans, sauces, and more.
